Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

The Ayatollah Ali Khamenei (Mashhad, 1939) is the Supreme Leader of Iran. President of Iran from 1981 to 1989, a term which overlapped with the war against Iraq under Saddam Hussein, he was then succeeded by the father of the Islamic Republic Ruhollah Khomeini in the role of Supreme Leader. Closely aligned with the most conservative wing of Iranian politics, he endorsed the country’s detachment from the West and the intervention of the Iranian Armed Forces during the Syrian conflict. Today he holds the majority share of executive, judicial am military power in a rapidly changing country.
