Colombia, The “Blood Coal”

One of Colombia’s poorest regions, La Guajira is home to the open cast mine of Cerrejon. After 30 years of mining, the surrounding are has faced a dramatic transformation greatly affecting the quality of life for local residents. As the demand for coal is decreasing and to avoid another resettlement dispute, the indigenous population and environmental groups hope to keep fighting to maintain residency and access to basic services which the mining industry has disrupted.
