Nathan Paul Southern is a security analyst, investigative reporter and PhD Candidate at the University of St. Andrews. He has a bachelor’s in Criminology, a Law degree, a Masters in Global Security and an MLitt in Terrorism and Political Violence. He worked in NGOs in Thailand and Bangladesh, combating human trafficking and forced marriage in the field. He also worked in the Prosecution team at the United Nations Khmer Rouge Tribunal in Cambodia before becoming a journalist reporting throughout the world. His research areas focus on non-traditional security threats, terrorism, militancy, organised crime, piracy, maritime security and Chinese expansionism. He has written for Foreign Policy, Quartz, Southeast Asia Globe and others while also co-directing a documentary on Chinese meddling in Cambodia.
