Barry spent 25 years in the print journalism jungle at various newspapers in Canada, including as a managing editor and editorial writer. He has won awards for editorial and humour writing and health reporting. Barry took a buyout package in 2013 and has since written for online websites. He is a graduate of the Liaison College cooking course and is a specialist chef in Italian cooking. He and his spouse and their Parson Russell Terrier live in Trenton, a small town near Toronto, Ontario.
